Slumdog Millionaire - Naked truth on display yet again

The very title of the film is enough to give you that jolts you, ask many questions, and raises many eyebrows. Slumdog Millionaire - Did it really deserve 8 Academy Awards including the Best Film? In spite of several back lashing it has rose to the top, why there was so much protests, so many disputes, so much sentiments attached to its string?

Nevertheless, there is something unique which probably made it so special, so real, that it touched so many inquisitive minds out of nothing so superlative. Whatever may be the reason, credit goes to Boyle to show cast a mere fictional story not tried by other Indian film intellectual in recent years.

So many intricate and underlying issues that it take you to a journey from light to the dark. He has shown that India even after becoming a software giant is still in that very place where it all began 60 yrs ago – may be few roads, skyscrapers and bridges were constructed. The core is still hollow with despair. A film infiltrated with so many wrongs than rights. You get to see the ugly poor, the despair, the tears, and open hands of bribe and corruption, yet love binding them all together. In other words, the mere existent truth of real India again getting worldwide recognition and critical acclaim.

Now it’s probably becoming a fast habit of the west to show Indian dark lanes. India is the centre of the fatal attraction. Exactly what draws them every time to this part of the world cannot be penned down without accepting the fact that it is nothing short of National disgrace.

The long boundary wall between the rich and the poor gets stronger and rigid. What lies beneath? It seems that the sublime beauty of the Indian Streets and slums seems to be more photogenic as day goes by. In 1992, another film showing the harsh adverse realities of the society also led to massive widespread display of protests sarcastically then made famous by the title CITY OF JOY no need to name the city...every thinking man knows.

Now the film which is under of so many scanners, I think is technically very brilliantly made with smart editing, crisp script and outstanding cinematography. Obviously though the storyline used to depict the fictional characters didn’t impressed me so much to deserve an Oscar as it was no where near other Oscar winning films if only the plot of the film is taken into account.

As an Indian, it is worth to get emotionally attached when anything goes irresistibly out of your hand. It is as if some one is pointing fingers at you and saying how much bad, how much dark u are from the inside. Take your breath, here it is being shown to the worldwide audience and it hurts more when everywhere is greeting that with thousand pairs of hands clapping so loud.

Till this day you get your country seen through the English camera lens and what it shows? Has been already said? Now what our Ministry of Broadcast & Public affairs has to say about it? What message does it sends out to them, most importantly to the literate holy monks at the temple of New Delhi?

India has been made the centre stage of depicting the lifestyle of some group of examples most often tagged The Third World Countrymen. At this very hour when India is globally referring itself becoming the next super power that Danny Boyle displays his sheer mastery by crafting a story revolving around a number of issues, riot, underworld, child labour, pick pocketing, prostitution, young thieves with total professionalism yet love persists and days goes by...

The depiction of this sort do not shock us so much but totally new enough to open the eyes of Westerners to sit up and see for themselves. A classic capture of the world which we see most of the time around us, be it on streets or markets or railway station. Most of the times failing to notice their strong fight against the odds...their courage to still stay alive even when they know they will fasting for one more day.

The problem lies within our system itself. Who are responsible for it? Blaming on the government serves no purpose, it’s after all by us that a government its elected. We are responsible for it than by blaming a person (unfortunately a foreigner) who has depicted something which is very true at the core and truthfully shocking, indeed, cruel and hard hitting inside at times.

As cinema is a more than a just a mere form of art, so it totally makes no logical sense by just complaining without understanding the root of the problem and try to eradicate it by our own available means.
The film deserves all the credit for its free flowing story telling and some amazing performances by the whole cast...sometimes it questions me to think whether it would have won so much acclaim had it been made by a Indian director. Don’t think so! The questions still remain to be answered.

A racism approach resulting in partiality is not new in America. If a film like SM gets so many awards then the classic masterpiece “Panther Panchali” by Ray surely deserved more credit than it had got [It won “Best Human Document” at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival and among the 100 greatest films ever made].

It’s truly a wonder that how come India is so happy, so much elated? We need to feel shame. We surely have no reasons to rejoice when India has not gained a single cent from it (I’m keeping music out of it, Rahman was famous in the music fraternity before this film...where the music is nowhere near his best...yet JAI HO was caught red-handed at the Kodak Theatre claiming an Oscar...Kudos!).

Neither has it been won by an Indian filmmaker. We will wait to see in what way Americans and British fund us. They are only standing for our cause in promoting cross border terrorism. Nothing can be expected out of them. Their intentions are very clear to market the vast Indian Illiterate audience. No lessons will be learnt.

Many may say that the film is a bad portrayal of India but the truth is this is actually what India is. Still India will keep singing as long as the Nuclear Deal is on the cards. The global recognition has been given to our already rich and famous stars. Story ends here! Poor ugly busy street Indians will remain where they use to belong on account of unfair birth right.

Now it’s time for them to venture out to the streets yet again. With the arrival of the new morning, for some may be it will be a good day in their dhanda, for most semi naked urchins it’s a closed chapter of education only to be called by their local saab to beg with crippled legs or for some slum boys like Jamaal life will see no change. Probably they will keep serving hot tea at some unknown roadside hotel.

‘Jamal’ of ‘Slumdog’ did become rich and got his love but all the poor children are not lucky enough. They still are living in slums, sleeping hungry, begging on streets, been beaten by the parents and the masters, in short, living in hell.

This is a problem to be taken seriously in India. Child abuse is another biggest issue that has to be dealt strictly. These are the children who easily fall into the trap and become criminals.

You are right Meredith. Physical and more importantly sexual abuse of a child leaves his psychology crippled and he easily chooses the path of crime.

This is serious, no doubt.

At time I wonder about Indians who says they are proud of their country....... Its culture and heritage.......... Agreed, that you are proud of the culture that was seeded centuries ago but have they ever thought where are they taking that culture today? India is still poor, corrupt to the core.......what are they proud of now???

We are still not ready to bring change. Whenever we see any such child, I don’t think it makes any difference to us. We’ve become habitual. The day we’ll start taking initiatives for poor children of our neighborhood, india will get rid of slums automatically, which im sure will never happen due to our ‘who cares’ attitude.
